Simplicity of Rural Living

I haven’t always lived in a city, I actually spent the first twenty years or so of my life living in a rural community. My family home is nestled in a valley between a river and a mountain. I spent much of my childhood and teen years exploring the river bends and mountain sides. It wasn’t until my mid teens that we even had the internet.

I miss that more simple living, where the most exciting part of a summer night was watching a rain storm come up the valley, nature’s fireworks is what my father calls it. I don’t have a porch that looks down a valley anymore but I do have a covered patio and backyard. In the spring and summer, this is my favorite place in my rental home. It’s where I relax, teach & practice yoga, cook dinner, and eat my meals.

There’s something about just being outside and yet still being at home. Since moving to the city, I have spent way too much time indoors and I have grown comfortable with it. In the winter, I have the hardest time because not only am I trapped inside, the days are short and there’s more darkness. Right now, I am thriving in the sunlight and warmth of the early summer. I love looking at my thermometer and seeing it inch its way up to thirty degrees celsius and above.

As for getting out into the wilderness, that I have to drive to get to now. I live right in the heart of downtown Kelowna and while it’s a pretty area, there’s not a lot of wilderness. Lucky for me, there’s some great parkland in our regional area.

That’s why I have set up what I am calling Adventure Yoga. It’s an outdoor yoga class with nature walks or hiking. The first one is taking place today, Monday May 22 at 5pm, at the Mission Creek Greenway. It’s an easy nature walk and yoga class, designed to be open to anyone of any fitness and skill level. If you are interested in come out, please follow this link to the Facebook event. The class is only $5 and can be paid at the gate before you enter the park. There is also a Yoga and Hiking class at Bear Creek Park on Wednesday, May 24 at 5pm, which you can sign up for on the Facebook link here.

If you can’t make it out to these class, don’t worry, there will be more classes posted in the coming weeks. Just keep an eye on my Facebook page for more details.
